Phokeethra Country Club will be the venue, for the second time, to the Asian Tour's Johnny Walker Cambodian Open, after having successfully played host to the inaugural Johnny Walker Cambodian Open, last year. With a prestigious Tournament such as this just 3 month away, preparations are well underway to make the course worthy of Asia's best. The course must match the strict requirements of the Asian Tour to be listed as a venue. Fairways must be cut to 12mm and be in spotless conditions. Weeds divots and other irregularities can not be tolerated. International Superintendent Jirapon Thongkham urges all of his staff to attention to detail. This includes the caddies that help maintaining the course by weeding and the greens keepers that cut the greens to maintain a green speed of ten feet. Through out the last year the entire team of Phokeethra Country Club has worked on making this year’s event even more successful than last years. General Manager Didier Lamoot has had and continues to monitor the progress at the Club. New trees that were strategically placed to eliminate short cuts were approved nursed at Phokeethra. Furthermore it was decided by the management that visually the course needed to upgrade. New flower beds as well as Lotus and Water Lilies to decorate the many Lakes and Creeks should give each hole a face lift. A water fountain marks the lake the lake that last year’s winner Bryan Saltus dove into after his final round. Has he started a tradition? Not far from the Fountain, the Clubhouse of Phokeethra Country Club undergoes touch up work to present itself to Players and guests alike in it's most beautiful appearance. The Clubhouse will host the Players Lounge, VIP area, Tournament office and the Media Centre. The Clubhouse provides a stunning few over the Tournaments 18th and leader board. Many will watch from here as Bryan Saltus attempts to defend his title. This year the JW Cambodian Open will be held from the 11th to 14th December. Players will find that the course has new exciting challenges up its sleeve. For example, hole number 9 and 18 have new tee-boxes that lengthen these holes by 20 to 30 yards. Hole number 9 for the Tournament, a par 5 and last hole of Phokeethra Corner, is now 608 yards long and offers a Long-hitters, if accurate, an opportunity for glory. |
