After successfully hosting the first international golf tournament to be held in the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open 2007, the Phokeethra Country Club is proud to announce that it will be hosting another such event this coming fall. The Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open 2008 will take place December 11 - 14, 2008, and will feature prominently on the PGA Asian Golf Tour. The tournament is sure to be of interest to many international golfers and spectators, as it will be organized in Siem Reap, home to one of Seven Wonders of the World, Angkor Wat. The golf course itself features a key historic artifact: the ancient Roluh Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage site, preserved and protected by Phokeethra. The Roluh Bridge is not only of historical significance, it is a symbolic link between past and future, as well as Cambodia and Thailand. Cambodian Open 2007 placed Cambodia squarely on the map as a key golfing destination in Asia and created awareness of the sport among local people. The event also provided a good opportunity to bring tourism and sports together. This year Phokeethra aims to expand the average stay of tourists who come to visit Siem Reap by offering golf packages and promoting the sport as a leisure option. Bryan Saltus, the American champion of the Cambodian Open 2007, plans to take part in junior golf tournaments in Cambodia in September before taking joining this year's open. His goal is to offer professional-level training to local children and young people interested in golf. Saltus, who bought a motorcycle for his caddy after winning in 2007, would like to do his part to help the young generation of Cambodia learn the fine art of golf. The Phokeethra Country Club plans to hold an official press conference on the Cambodian Open 2008 this coming September to create more media exposure for this important event.
