Phokeethra Country Club Monthly Newsletter May 2011 Welcome to the fourth edition of the Phokeethra Country Club Monthly Newsletter. As usual I will be providing you with an insight into what has been happening at the Club recently and what we have coming up. Caddie Training: Course Guide |
![]() |
| A Caddies’ Course Guide is like a caddy’s best friend. One of the training sessions we do is based on the Course Guide and how to use it. A Course Guide is a hole-by-hole map that includes detailed pictures of each hole, distances and tips on how to best play the hole. A Caddy must learn this book and its contents in order to give accurate advice to the golfer for the duration of the round. The most important part of the process is the communication from the caddy. We have players with a wide range of nationalities, and the level of English varies tremendously. Therefore, the caddy must be able to communicate clearly when giving this type of advice. Each caddy is required to learn the description of each hole, the distances from designated areas and the best way to play the hole. Caddies who learn this by memory are able to confidently advise the golfer throughout the entire game. Changing of the 9’s As of June 1, 2011 we are switching the 9’s round. We do this on a yearly basis for the Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open, as it is more efficient to have the closing 18th hole coming directly back to the clubhouse for all to see. So this means, the difficulty of the course is also switched, with the more challenging nine to be played first and the more straightforward nine to be left for last. Coming through the first nine holes with a good to average score will be a real confidence booster; as you know, on the back nine, there are plenty of good chances to pick up some shots. Just to familiarise yourself, you can see the layout of the new course on the Scorecard below. ![]() Membership Our membership base is growing each month, and with our new SMART Membership available, I expect it to increase more and more. This month, I am going to give you a very simple yet effective tip on how to improve your putting and gain more consistency. A common mistake for golfers when putting is to lift the head up too early in the anticipation of seeing where the ball is headed. This occurs in all parts of the game whether it is with a driver, iron or putter. Having the discipline to wait a bit longer to lift your head up is easier said than done. Lifting your head up early can lead to a number of faults. The main faults being, bad contact and a change in path for your putter head which in turn will lead to inconsistent direction. The first thing you can do is use this drill in your practice stroke. Swing back and through with the putter 2 or 3 times keeping your head perfectly still, your eyes fixed on a small target on the ground and finally making sure you keep your head down until the stroke is completely finished. Then it’s up to you to commit to it in the real stroke. A great tip for this is during short putts. Once you hit the ball, do not lift your head until you hear the ball drop in the hole. Waiting for that sound is a great way to encourage yourself to keep your head down...after all this tip is used by Tiger himself!
